Like a Bird

I wished I were like you

Swept by the wind

Over the meadows mountains and seas

I weave through the clouds

And think the world is mine.

I wished I were like you

Wings to lift me gracefully

Up and up

As high as I wish to rise

As far as I can go

Over trees and pastures

I glide with a light heart and clear mind

As swift as my wings can endure.

Or if so wish

Like pollen in spring

I float over grass fields,

Looking for sustenance

Apart and above this earth

In my sight I would perceive the world

Like a jigsaw puzzle in a box

Pieces fitting in the order of creation

Unraveled not, by the blind.

I wish I were you

To feel the world is mine,

Unencumbered by the fear of death

Or the need to live forever

I wish I were you

See as far as I can.

And need not see far and beyond.

I wished I were you

Death, nothing to fear

And pain I would not seem to endure

Or ask for pity or comfort.

I wish I were you

What’s beneath me

Would be my domain

And not much to clutter

My mind with greed

I wish I were you

To take that so refreshing bath

In that little puddle

On the lily pad

In the midst of the pond.

I wish I were you

To have a sweet breath,

And a clear mind

To feel the world is mine

And my interest is, in what

I can see and feel.

What’s beyond in no way

A concern of mine.

I wish I were you

And have no fear of

Hurricanes, Earthquakes

Or frightful creatures not in my vision.

I wish I were you

Instincts as sharp as a blade

My coat as wool, rain and sleet it shrugs.

To feel warm and safe beneath a leaf.

Or under the eaves of a homely home.

I wish I were you

And like you

Be thankful of my creation

On this earth

In my own little paradise.
